Appearance
Deep bright ruddy mahogany with copper highlights and a trace of green at the rim.
Nose
Forthcoming and almost powerful yet extremely elegant with all the beauty that only age can bestow. It has lots of toasted nuts: almonds and especially hazelnuts and has a hint of sweetness like turrón as well as gentle notes of oak and more exotic woods and the faintest trace of smoke.
Palate
Full bodied and intensely flavoured with lots of volatile acidity, a fair amount of glycerine and a faint yet attractive bitterness along with that implied sweetness which gives Amontillado its charm. There is a hint of oak and the corresponding trace of tannin and lots of nuts. The finish is very long.
Comments
This superb new Sherry comes from the new bodega established by oenologist Alberto Orte who also makes the superb Atlántida red and white from Cádiz - and other wines in other parts of Spain - sold by the firm he is a partner in, the Compañia de Vinos del Atlántico. He owns three small organically farmed vineyards in the pago Añina: San Cristóbal, San José and El Aljibe, the produce of which refreshes the 18 butt Fino solera which in turn refreshes this Amontillado solera which has 6 criaderas. It was scrupulously assembled over years from butts bought from bodegas and almacenistas and again consists of 18 butts. The final product has an average age of over 40 years but sacas are very small, only a little over 200 bottles.
