Estevez urges Sherry
sector to avoid losses of vineyard
Jose Ramon Estevez, president of Grupo Estevez, wants to see
some sort of pact to ensure the survival of the Sherry business. After two
decades of stagnation, the business is now in balance and now is a key moment
to ensure that the growers and vineyards survive. Without them there would be
no wine, no bodegas. “We must make the vineyards profitable or they will simply
disappear. Current stocks are about 350,000 butts, and the 2012 vintage will
bring in about 50,000, but if sales are running at 85,000 the conclusion is
obvious.”
“What we need is a long term plan. Up till now the bodegas
have only been thinking about reducing costs, stocks, staff. Now is the moment
for us all to join together and move forward, from the bottom up and create a
good business model. The era of over production is over and Sherry has ceased
to be a “commodity”. Now it is a question of quality rather than quantity.
