Miquichote Syrah Crianza 2017 14.1%, JJ Timermans

Appearance
Very deep black tinged cherry red with a tight purply pink rim.
Nose
Fresh young and tangy with fairly intense black berry fruit; a lively mix of perfectly ripe black berries and black cherries with only a suggestion of Syrah´s hallmark hint of smoke and only a trace of oak, predominantly French perhaps. All this gives it a subtle and very attractive complexity.
Palate
Mid to full bodied with loads of black fruits and a refreshing acidity keeping it lively and accentuating the fruit. There is a faint background hint of salinity and just a trace of oak which gives it a more serious edge and it has a gentle tannic grip which suggests it could improve over a couple of years in bottle. Being from albariza it has a dry chalky texture and the finish is long.
Comments
Juan Jeronimo Timermans Parra is based in the important area of Trebujena where he grows these Syrah grapes among others in the south facing pago El Duque on lustrillo soils. 2017 was an excellent year with perfect growing conditions in terms of temperatures and rainfall giving very healthy grapes which were hand picked at dawn on the 11th August. The wine was fermented in tanks and aged for seven months in a mix of American and French oak barrels. Only 500 bottles were released, sealed with Diam corks, and the wine was not filtered or clarified. If only more could have been produced, this is delicious.

Miquichote Roble 2017 15.5%, JJ Timermans

Appearance
Intense black red with a fairly tight pink tinged rim showing youth.
Nose
Crisp fresh red and black berry fruit: brambles, blackcurrants, raspberries and plums and the faintest and very slightly smokey note of cinnamon which may have to do with the Syrah and/or the French oak. There is also a gentle hint of salinity adding a cleanness to a very attractive and inividual nose.
Palate
Full bodied and very fruity with a lively acidity which accentuates that fruit. On the phenolic side there is considerable extraction and notable though modest tannins give it a dry grip aided by a hint of chalk but nothing aggressive, allowing the fruit to dominate. It is remarkably drinkable- indeed moreish - for such a well structured and young wine, and will certainly develop well over the next couple of years. Good long fruity finish with that almost exotic hint of cinnamon.
Comments
Juan Jeronimo Timermans is based in Trebujena and this wine comes from the pago El Duque which sits on various forms of albariza. It is made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot which were picked quite late in the season, at dawn for maximum freshness, on the 12th September. It was fermented in tank followed by three months ageing in French and American oak barrels and bottled without filtration or clarification. Only 500 hand numbered bottles were released sealed with a Diam cork.

Miquichote Syrah 2016 11.88%, JJ Timermans

Appearance
Almost opaque black cherry with a fairly tight rim, still with some purple in the red.
Nose
Full and forthcoming with good varietal character; a mix of well ripened black and red fruits with faint spice and smoke notes and a very clean trace of mineral. There is a certain balsamic plumpness about it and slight hints of dusty oak.
Palate
Fairly full bodied with plenty of fruit and perfect acidity. There is less plumpness now and the mineral note is more pronounced along with a slight dryness which is not tannic. There is a little ripe tannin which is not at all aggressive, simply giving a little structure. The vineyard has definitely left its mark on the wine and it is most attractive.

This wine is made by Juan Jerónimo Timermans Parra one of the many smallholders who grow grapes in Trebujena. Juan's vineyard sits on various forms of albariza in the Pago El Duque. Here he grows Palomino, some Perruno and a little Syrah and he supplies mosto to Bodegas Urium. Miquichote is made from 100% Syrah and is aged for two months in French oak and six more in bottle. Just one barrel was made and 100 bottles released.
