Bodegas: RF Cárdenas

This small Enterprise in El Puerto de Santa María, also known as Tasca El Bodegón, really merits a visit. It really is a “bodegón” or bodega/bar run by Héctor Cárdenas, a fine flamenco guitarist, which of course attracts flamenco people to the bar who perform on Saturdays. The initials RF refer to the children of Héctor and his wife Macarena Gómez Feria: Reyes and Fernando.

Despite only being opened in 2010, this bar looks like it has been here forever. The wines in butts arranged in “altars” are Fino Pavón from Luís Caballero and Fino, Amontillado and Oloroso produced by his grandfather, Sebastián Monge Huerta, in his own little bodega. He also has Manzanilla from Barón and some Moscatel from Chipiona. A variety of good food is always available and they have a reputation for game.

The old building adjacent to the bull ring has seen a variety of uses: stables for the Civil Guard, bar, fruit store, parking for a beer distributor, tyre depot and plasterer’s workshop. The walls are adorned with bullfighting memorabilia obtained through his wife’s family connections. There are also shelves holding a collection of old bottles from El Puerto, many from bodegas now lost. Old bodega equipment and labels are also to be seen. Much of this comes from Macarena’s grandfather who had a bar El Refugio, now gone.

The bodegón, like Sebastián Monge has always sold wine in bulk, but has just launched a limited availability bottled Fino wine: Monge Vino en Rama, named after Héctors grandfather. It is presented in an old fashioned sand blasted short bottle sealed with wax and the flag of Andalucía. The label is a reproduction of an old print of the bull ring, completed in 1880. The wine cannot be called Fino as the bodega is not in the DO, but it is made from the same grapes and by the same method and is very good.

Vino en rama Monge 15%, Bodegas RF Cárdenas

Appearance
Some depth of colour, bright straw with golden tints, very light legs.
Nose
Big fresh and soft, flor noticeable but fairly muted, fresh bread dough, a trace of salinity and a slight hint of wax reminded me slightly of Montilla, but actually it is a really good Sherry.
Palate
Full forthcoming and dry, some breadth, low acid but some bitterness from the flor sorts out the balance, very tasty with traces of straw, almond and bread dough, long clean finish.
Comments
Launched at the end of October 2015 this is an extremely creditable wine and the only one sold in bottle by this family bodegón in El Puerto. Grapes come from family owned vineyard. Although it is made by the standard system of criaderas and soleras within the zona de crianza, they felt that given the limited quantities available it was not worth while, at least at this stage, to join the DO. Because of that they sell it as "Vino" en rama. Sealed with a standard "T" cork and wax with an Andalusian flag tassel in a sand blasted bottle. I really recommend this wine.
Price
About 7 euros, but only available locally unfortunately.

28.11.15 La Guita En Rama, Lacum Dulce and Vino en Rama Launched

The run-up to Christmas is always a good time to launch new products, and so La Guita has launched its first Manzanilla En Rama. It consists of a saca made in October, is a blend from the Misericordia and Pago Sanlúcar Viejo bodegas and the wine is 4.5 years old, being available in half bottles at €9.15. The label bears the image of the old XVIII century doorway of the Hospital de la Misericordia, entrance to the Bodega Misericordia. The grapes were mostly from the Pago Miraflores.

Lacum Listán Dulce has also just been launched. Gabriel Ángel Raya Fernández, a well- known Sanlúcar winemaker, has dedicated this first naturally sweet wine from Sanlúcar to his granddaughter Montse. It is made from super-ripe Listán grapes, otherwise known as Palomino, and fortified to 18ᴼ to retain the sweetness of the must. Available in a small release of 800 numbered 50cl. bottles, the wine costs €12.

Meanwhile over in El Puerto, Bodegas Cárdenas has launched its first bottled “Vino en Rama”. Vino rather than Fino because the bodega is not a member of the DO and therefore can’t use the name, it is nevertheless made from Palomino grapes and aged in a solera system. The bodega has hitherto only sold wine in bulk to local bars. This new wine is available locally at €6 per 75 cl. bottle.
