Bodegas: Miguel Domecq

Miguel Domecq Solis is the seventh generation of the famous Domecq family. He was in charge of the firm´s foreign subsidiaries before becoming finance and communication director. When the family sold out in 1994 Miguel began to think about making his dream of a table wine bodega into a reality. After all such wines had been made in the area since antiquity. He had inherited the Cortijo de Torrecera in 1999 and in 2003 he planted some vines and made his first experimental wine in 2006. It soon became clear that the vineyards had great potential for table wine in albariza soils and he set up the bodega in 2007 making its first oficial vintage in 2008 which finally went to market in 2010. Despite starting out at the beginning of a global financial crisis the bodega has been a great success.

The Cortijo de Torrecera is located in the 800 hectare Entrechuelos estate about 15 kilometres south east of Jerez and has a large artificial lake and a pond with Roman columns and fish. Nearby there are the remains of a Phonecian settlement with a winery dating back to 800 BC and at the top of the hill the remains of a XII century Moorish tower, the Torrecera, probably built on Roman foundations from which one can see half the province.

The Torrecera surrounded by vineyards

There are 38 hectares of vineyard planted close to the winery with Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and some Petit Verdot along with a little Sauvignon Blanc and Tintilla. Green harvesting is practised and picking is carried out nocturnally. Individual grape varieties and those of different parcels are vinified separately after being sorted on a selection table and the wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks which are temperature controlled, as are the barrel and bottle stores. All barrels are French oak and reasonably young.
